What Is the Difference Between Vein Cut and Rift (Cross) Cut Slabs?

rift-vs-vein-cut-stone

In general, the terms rift cut (also referred to as cross cut) and vein cut refers to the way the natural stone was cut. There is a noticeable difference in the vein pattern of the stone depending on if the stone is rift or vein cut. Read more to learn the main differences between two most common ways to cut blocks of natural stone.

rift-vs-vein-cut

rift-vs-vein-cut-infographic

What does “vein cut” slab look like?

Vein cut is the most traditional and recognizable cut for marble slabs. The majority of marble has a vein cut pattern. Vein cut is distinctive in that you will be able to trace to vein across the entirety of the slab. Stones that are vein cut typically have the ability to be bookmatched or quad-matched to take on a unique shape and style.

What does a “rift cut” or “cross cut” slab look like?

Stone that is cut to a 90 degree angle to the bed rock or “from the top” is called rift cut or cross cut. A rift cut stone slab will have more spotting or noticeable crystals visible in the stone.

Warm Weather, Warm Stone

Do you often feel your kitchen is too cold? Or clean and modern but not very warm? Spring is the perfect time to renovate your space and make some simple updates that can bring the warmth that everyone craves back into your home. The use of warm tones creates an inviting space for you and your family to enjoy all year long, from Summer to Spring!
Warmth and depth are brought to life in this modern kitchen design below with Madreperla Quartzite. The stones warm, earthen tones include cremes, soft grays, taupes and rusts.  The veining lends itself to creating a sense of depth and thus an added warmth through texture.
Mixing materials is a great way to bring in warmth as well through depth and texture. Angie Keyes of Design Works Kitchen and Bath, made great use of materials to create a warm and inviting kitchen. Angie mixed in Nacarado Quartzite with its summery orange veining and neutral base color pairs perfectly with the hammered metal vent hood and wrought iron pot holder chandelier.  The dark chocolate tiles arranged in a chevron pattern is a modern twist on a more traditional style kitchen and creates great visual interest.
Angie_Keyes_Design_Works
Mark Williams of Mark Williams Design Associates transformed the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle Home for the Holidays kitchen bringing in warmth to this white kitchen with the bookmatched Taj Mahal Quartzite behind the range and island. Mark masterfully mixed new and old within his design introducing fabrics in warm chocolate tones that enhance the more subtle natural stone and the darker wooden pantry pieces in the room.

Aria Project Interview: Barbara Gilbert

Aria_Stone_Gallery_Barbara_Gilbert_Web
Photographer: Michael Hunter

Barbara_GilbertAria: How did you get into interior design?

Barbara Gilbert: Interior design gives me the opportunity to use my creativity while  fulfilling my client’s dreams. I love to think outside the box and try new designs. Seeing the finished project and the look on the client’s face is such an amazing feeling.  I can honestly say that I love what I do!

Aria: What is currently inspiring you in design?

Barbara Gilbert: Mixing things up is always fun.  For instance I love to pair old beams or floors, or a family heirloom with contemporary furniture.  Clean fresh colors paired with neutral fabrics can stand the test of time.  We strive to transform ordinary places into unique inspiring spaces.

Aria: How do you approach stone in your designs?

Barbara Gilbert: I absolutely love natural stone, it never ceases to amaze me that these slabs actually come out of the ground.  Having said that I lean towards exotic stones, so my clients have a better chance of having something that is not common and unusually beautiful.

Aria: What inspired this Fusion art piece?

Barbara Gilbert: Our client wanted a wow factor and something different. Every time I come into your stone gallery I would always think “one of these days I’m going to hang a slab as artwork for a client,” luckily, I found the perfect client who allowed me to do so.  I wanted a natural organic element rather than a standard piece of art work and the results are stunning!

Aria: What is your advice for some one who is about to start a renovation, or just wants to refresh their home?

Barbara Gilbert: If at all possible, they should hire a designer.  A designer will keep them from making costly mistakes.  If hiring an interior designer is not an option they should try to duplicate a picture in a magazine or a photo on one of the many online forums.

Finding Azurite Video

Vinny Tavares, Owner of Aria Stone Gallery, hand selects each stone for the gallery. Last year, Vinny received a call from a small quarry in Brazil saying that they had discovered some of the most vibrant and beautiful blue azurite that they had ever seen. He wanted to make sure he was the first to obtain this rare material.

Vinny quickly hopped on a flight to Brazil, boarded a tiny puddle jumper to fly him into the countryside, climbed in the back of a pickup truck and crossed rivers, mountain and tiny villages to reach this remote quarry. There, he discovered stunning pieces of stone that he then brought back to Aria.
